›What is a FEN?
One line of text that describes a whole position: where every piece stands, whose turn it is, and what is still allowed. Chess.com and Lichess will both hand you one from any game, usually under a share or export menu.

- Pieces
- Each rank from 8 down to 1, separated by slashes. Capitals are white, lowercase black, and a digit is that many empty squares in a row.
- Turn
- w or b. Whose move it is.
- Castling
- K and Q for white's kingside and queenside, k and q for black's. A dash means nobody can castle any more.
- En passant
- The square a pawn could be captured on this move after a two-square push. Usually a dash.
- Halfmove clock
- Moves since the last capture or pawn move, for the fifty-move rule.
- Move number
- Which move of the game this is.
